Joby‘s Gems and Crystals offers an exciting and unique gem mining experience! Our gem mining process allows guests to uncover a variety of sparkling gems and crystals in a fun and easy way. This gem mining experience is great for all ages.
Guests begin by choosing a bucket or bag of rough material, which contains a mix of natural gems and minerals, such as quartz, amethyst, tourmaline, garnet, and citrine Then they dump a small amount of the rough material onto a screening tray and submerge the tray in a tank of water. Using the tray, guests can then gently agitate the material in the water, they will then place the screen into the water and rinse it with clean water by moving it back and forthand watch as the sparkle and color of the gems and minerals are revealed.
All the gems and crystals that are revealed can then be collected in the bucket or bag and taken home. Our gem mining process is a great way for kids and adults to have fun and uncover hidden treasures!
At Joby’s Gems and Crystals in Bethel Park PA, we strive to make gem mining an enjoyable experience for all of our guests. Our gem mining staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and are always willing to answer any questions or provide advice.
Geodes are rocks that contain a hollow cavity lined with crystals or other mineral deposits. They are formed when hot, molten rock cools and contracts underground.
The exterior of the geode will be plain, rounded or egg–shaped, and the inside is often lined with beautiful crystals and minerals. Many geodes are found in sedimentary rock, meaning they formed from particles that were deposited in lakes, rivers, and oceans. As the particles were deposited, they were slowly pressed together and formed sedimentary rock.
Over time, pockets of water filled the spaces between the particles and slowly dissolved the minerals within them. This process created the hollow cavities inside the geode and allowed the minerals to re–crystallize on the inside walls.
Geodes can also be found in volcanic rocks. Volcanic geodes are formed by the same process as sedimentary geodes, but they are formed by lava instead of sedimentary particles. When the lava cools, it contracts and forms hollow pockets, which can be filled with different minerals and crystals. Geodes can also be found in areas with limestone deposits.
Limestone is formed from the remains of ancient sea creatures and plants. As limestone is exposed to water and air, it slowly begins to erode and create hollow cavities. These cavities can be filled with minerals, allowing them to crystallize and form beautiful geodes.
At Joby’s Gems and Crystals, we offer three sizes of break your own geodes for sale. The mini geode is the smallest of the three sizes, measuring about 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The medium geode is the next size up and measures about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Finally, the large geode is the largest of the three and measures about 4 to 5 inches in diameter.
We also have Dyed Geode that are black and purple. No matter where they were formed, geodes are a beautiful addition to any collection. They can be used to create stunning jewelry, home décor, and even display pieces.
